Working in the media

If you’re already working in the media or you’re thinking of embarking on a career in this industry, it’s worth knowing that there’s professional support available to help you increase your chances of making a good living and becoming successful.

Although the media industry hasn’t been immune to the recent economic problems, more and more people are working in the media every year – there’s currently over half a million people working in the industry in the UK alone, and as technology continues to advance, more and more opportunities are being created.

What jobs are available if I want to work in the media industry?

Working in the media means different things to different people; animation experts, computer graphics and games, TV and film production and many other types of job fall under this industry umbrella. Within each of these fields, there are a multitude of different types of job; for example, in broadcast television, TV advertising and filmmaking you need a whole production team, including researchers, make up and wardrobe creatives, cameramen, sound engineers, editors and many other professionals in order for these productions to be successful.

The important thing to know if you’re interested in working in the media is that many of these professionals work on contractual basis – this means that they’re employed as freelancers, taking responsibility for their own tax and contract terms. While this can be a good thing as it allows you freedom and the chance to embrace new opportunities as they come along, for some people the thought of having to manage what is effectively their own business is a bit of a nightmare!
